A week of Miracles! -- June 22, 2015

Hello Everyone,

For one year, I have been praying and fasting for Marcus to be baptized! I was able to teach him for six months while I was in my first area. Near the end of those six months, we were waiting for special permission for Marcus from the first Presidency before we could baptize him. We were in a long waiting period for over six months.

In the middle of this waiting period, Marcus had some really scary health issues. He had some major heart attacks that somehow resulted in him going into a coma. I was able to give Marcus a blessing when he was in a coma, right before I got transferred out of my first area. In the blessing, we received some strong impressions that God had a specific plan for Marcus; we were not sure if he would live or not. This is how I left him in my first area, personally thinking that I would never see him again and would have to do his temple work.

I got transferred and tried my best to keep tabs on how he was doing. While he was in a coma and very sick, my mission president informed me that The Prophet, Thomas S. Monson, and his counselors had written him a letter and gave direct permission for Marcus to be baptized. What a joy that was, but we were still not sure if he would make it out of his medical issues.

About four or five months later, I got a phone call telling me that Marcus had survived and was recovering greatly. The best news was that he was staying in a rehab center that was in my zone, and I had permission to go teach him and help him prepare to be baptized! That was about a month or so ago.

We taught him multiple times a week and to my surprise, he was still very sharp with his knowledge of the gospel! In fact, he was even sharper than before. The lessons were more of a review than anything. My mission president was able to meet with him and interview him one last time before he got baptized.

Well last week it finally happened! I was able to drive down and meet my trainer, Elder Lopez, there and we helped him perform the ordinance. It was amazing! The baptism happened one year to the day that we first met Marcus and taught him. The Lord does things in His time!

As I was reflecting on the experience I had at the baptism, a prompting took me back to the first presidency message in PMG, where it says, "more happiness and joy awaits you than you have ever experienced." I truly felt that joy in my heart this weekend. It was so strong that if I had one wish, I would show any struggling missionary that feeling and try to help them taste and feel the Eternal Happiness that I felt as I was able to see a man that I came to love make a covenant with God and access the fullness of the atonement. I will forever be in debt to my Heavenly Father for this blessing. Does it get any better than this?

What a miracle all of this was! It was certainly a great week!!!

Along with Marcus’ baptism this week, Michael also got baptized here in Princeton!

We had a good lesson this last week and we finally worked out some of the concerns he had about being baptized. Michael had backed out of four baptism dates before this one. But this baptism was very special! Mike has such a strong testimony of the gospel! It blows me away the faith he has. He is going to make such a great member of the church! He looked so happy after the baptism and even said that he felt so different. He said, “I feel amazing!” And it showed!

This weekend was packed with miracles! My companion performed the baptism--I was really happy about that because he worked so hard for it, even before I got here and he goes home next week. I gave a talk at the baptism and I felt lucky to do that as well.

It is crazy to think that all of this started by him watching the Simpsons and he heard a Mormon reference and found Mormon.org. The Lord truly gathers His Elect! (D&C 33)

I love this work, it is so amazing!

P.S. This is the family that I taught a year ago. We baptized the dad, Elias. They are still very active in the church and expecting to go to the temple in the near future. I was so happy to see them as well. I am overwhelmed with joy and satisfaction!

A mild Week! -- June 15, 2015

Hello Everyone,

Well this week was an alright one.

At the start of the week, we had a big specialized training with our Mission President. It was so much fun, I loved it. We talked a lot about the Atonement out of 2 Nephi 9. He taught it very simply but it was very powerful. We also talked some on the importance of Keeping the Sabbath Day Holy. It was a great conference--it helped me out a lot!

Later that night, we had a meeting with the stake president and our mission president and us zone leaders. It was cool; These meetings always make us kind of nervous, but it turned out fine. We talked about the strengths and the struggles of the stake concerning missionary work. It was a good reminder of just how important members are in missionary work!

I had the privilege of interviewing two people this week for baptism. A grandma and her granddaughter, age 17, got baptized in my last area. Missionaries found this family 40 years ago and they helped them lay sheet rock in their home. They have been really investigating for the past two years off and on. I started the first interview with the grandmother and by the second question, I knew that she was ready by something she had said. I asked her, “Do you believe Joseph Smith was a prophet of God?” Her response was, "Yes I do! That is why I don't drink coffee anymore!" I thought, wow, what great faith! It was a cool experience!

We are still working close with Marcus. He still has some concerns we have not figured out, although, we love him and he has such great faith in everything he has learned. The Lord will work in his timing. Sometimes it is hard to be patient! ;) Please keep him in your prayers!

I will have an awesome surprise for you next week! Something big is going to happen!

I am so grateful for this mission! Sometimes things can be a little rough, but it is the Lord’s work and it is always done His way. I love Him and I am loving this opportunity I have.

Keep the Faith!

One Year Down! -- June 8, 2015

Hello Everyone,

Well this week went a different direction then we were expecting.

So last week I talked a lot about a man named Marcus that we have been teaching. He was supposed to get baptized on Sunday. We do not know why, but Marcus backed out at the last minute on Saturday night. It was pretty crushing for us.
We had done all we could for him. We were fasting all day Saturday and still walking the streets in the hot weather. He had a very uplifting experience when he passed his baptism interview and was just so solid.  Marcus even went to the DC Temple, on his own, last week just to go see it and feel the spirit. He was doing family history, so he could start on his deceased relative’s work right after he was baptized. He was the most solid man I have ever taught.

Saturday night we were getting worried because we hadn't heard back from him all day. So he finally sent us a message and said "the LDS church is just not for me" and apologized and canceled his baptism. This was so hard because we all knew that he was so ready. We think his family might have threatened him again. So please keep him in your prayers. We hope we will hear back from him soon so we can try to get him back.
The most frustrating thing about missionary work is accepting the principle about agency. No matter what you do or how good of a missionary you are, people still have to accept the message and act on it for themselves. This is the saddest part of the work! When you love someone and know what they need and could have and they, for any given reason, make the wrong choice.

But luckily we have a loving God that is patient with our decisions and has given us a Savior, someone to redeem us from our wrong decisions and help us achieve God’s purpose, to have us return to live with him some day. How grateful I am for that loving God and for the Savior’s infinite atonement.
Well besides that, the week was really busy and we put in a lot of hard work!

It was really neat to see a handful of inactive members that we have been working with for weeks make it back to church yesterday for the first time in years! It made us feel good The ward needs them and they felt that!

So I hit my year mark. . . . .  This also brought some mixed emotions. I can’t believe that I only have a year left. I am going to make this next year even greater than my last! This time as a missionary is so precious and I am loving it!
Thank you all so much for the support. I love you and Keep the Faith!

P.S. The picture is me burning a shirt for my Hump day! My hand was literally on fire. . . but I got the shot!

HUMMMPPPP DAAAYYY!!! -- June 1, 2015

Hello Everyone,

What a wonderful week! It was a roller coaster, but we had some amazing lessons and experiences! I also can’t believe I rolled up on my year mark. It’s scary to think that I only have a year left of this! I have so much that I need to accomplish still and learn. I would never have thought that time would pass by so fast. What a great journey it is!

So I guess I will give you an update on Marcus! He is doing fantastic. He is still ready to go on Sunday for his baptism! He is doing so solid, he came to church with us and we had a great lesson on the life of Christ. We also had a class our third hour on Family History; he is thrilled that he can do work for his deceased ancestors. I have never seen anyone so excited about Family History in my life. It was really neat. He is spending the day today up in DC at the temple. He wanted to go to the visitor’s center before he gets baptized on Sunday--so solid! I'm also happy my companion is going to be able to see an awesome baptism that he has worked hard for before he goes home! Marcus has been the biggest blessing!

So our area is in an awkward stage of rebuilding our teaching pool! We have some awesome friends learning about the church that are progressing very well but we have been praying and working very hard to find people that are looking for the truth! So please keep us in your prayers that we can accomplish our goals :)

We had something neat happen to us this week that was a little out of the usual. We were walking, trying to find some people to teach and we were headed down this street and a guy stopped and pulled over, rolled down his window and asked for a pamphlet. After trying to play us for a minute, he started to be a real jerk. He told us some pretty mean stuff and then cussed us out and drove off.... It was a little hard. We were already having a bad day--I was upset with what happened.

Well my companion was a great example to me and we tried to just brush it off and keep going. We did, and about an hour later, we were walking on a main street and a car did the same thing, only this time it was a very nice man that went and bought us some water and gave it to us and told us how much he admired us for our service. That man left, and no less than a minute later, a sports car did the same thing! A different man stopped and told us how thankful he was for our service and he asked if he could do anything for us!

What I learned from that experience is that the Lord is very mindful of his missionaries. I felt the Love of my Heavenly Father as he prompted these men to simply stop and thank us for our hard work. He is so mindful of his children and he is ready to support us and lift us through our trials as long as we do as he asks of us!

I hope everyone has a great week! I love you all! Keep the Faith!
